CMT 11 Photography Terms

Aperture - a hole or opening in which light travels through.
Depth of field - distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene.
Darkroom - a room made completely dark to allow the processing of light sensitive materials.
Developer - chemical that makes the latent image visible.
Enlargement - special transparency projector used for making prints.
F-stop - the setting of an adjustable lens aperture as indicated by an f-number.
Fixer - chemical used in the final process in the photographic processing of film.
ISO - used to measure film speed which is the measure of a photographic film's sensitivity to light.
Panning - horizontal movement or rotation of a still or video camera.
Single-lens reflex camera (SLR) - camera that typically uses a mirror and prism system that permits the photographer to view through the lens and see exactly what is being captured.
Stop Bath - chemical bath used in the processing of black and white photos.
Telephoto lens - camera lens that magnifies the image.
View camera - type of camera first developed in the Daguerreotype era and still in use today.
Viewfinder camera - the preview window on a camera that is used to frame, focus, and take the picture.
Zoom lens - a lens allowing a camera to change smoothly between a long shot to a close-up and vice versa.
Continuous tone photography - images that have a virtually unlimited range of colors or shades of grey.
Lens - a light gathering device of a camera.
Wide-angle lens - a camera lens that has a wider than normal angle of view.
Shutter - device that allows light to pass for a determined period of time.
